HGC Radio - Episode 25: I'd Hit That!

[DOWNLOAD MP3]

The Silver Anniversary Edition of The Handsome Genius Club Radio Show hits the internet full of sound and fury signifying something special. 25 episodes in the books and your very best source for "pop culture conversation and highly opinionated opinions" keep getting better each passing week.

This week, ANTHONY KINGDOM JAMES and TJ HABIBI welcome their special guest, comedian DAVE HUDSON, to talk about juggling life as a touring stand-up comic and a dedicated family man. (Heck, Dave's kids interupt the interview in search of hot chocolate and marshmellows!) Dave also talks about his nerd interests including his favorite comic books, his idea for a Star Trek television series with a very captain who shops smart (by shopping S-Mart), how much he's looking forward to seeing The Watchmen on the big screen and how much he thinks the new Star Trek movie is going to stink.

Then it's on to a trio of the HGC's usual suspects as CHRIS MAVERICK discusses the Rihanna-Chris Brown situation, WORDBURGLAR gives us his review of THE WATCHMEN after having attended a special screening this past Tuesday and NOAH PANICO pays tribute to recently deceased radio legend Paul Harvey with a salutory "THE REST OF THE STORY". Plus, Kingdom brings us NERD NEWS, an update on HGC t-shirts and discusses a recent e-mail from a listener.

This week's handsome links...
-Keep track of comedian Dave Hudson's very funny whereabouts, check out his MySpace page
-Check out TJ Habibi's band: Secret Suburbia.
-Kingdom updates the HGC's Twitter and Facebook regularly.

This week's music:
First break - "Right Round" by Flo Rida (because the only rap songs that get massive airplay these days are about strippers).
Second break - "Spit Fresh" by Wordburglar (because 'Burgy is our boy and his music is awesome).

So I saw Watchmen the other day, and it was completely and totally super. The complaints I have about the movie are so miniscule and ridiculous that they don’t even really merit mentioning, but because I love to complain about shit, here goes.

1. The lead gal who played Laurie was at best a dull, mediocre actress. That’s at best. Her performance was pretty lame, especially when you compare it to the other folks in the film. It seemed like amateur hour as far as she went. I understand this is a comic book movie and all, but still, I doubt I will find anyone who would defend against my position.

2. I think they could have easily cut out about 10 minutes of the movie that didn’t need to be there. I talk specifically about the scene with Nite owl failing to get it up, followed by the fire rescue scene. I know that the literary meaning of the scene is that costumes and fighting crime give these people boners, but they could have had the two just take archie out for a joyride and have them do it there to shave a few more minutes from the film rather than going through the clumsy first sex-attempt/bad dream/fire rescue parts. Not a huge deal, but I think it would have been a bit smoother this way as far as the flow of the film. I am all for remaining faithful to the comic, but sometimes it’s best to glide over some parts, and they did for the most part, MUCH to their credit!

3. The make up on Nixon was really, really bad. I mean…distractingly bad. My god, he looked like Madam from the old tv show.

4. My last complaint is that Comedian’s “See you in the Funny Pages/Papers/Whatever he said I can’t remember it at the moment” line was omitted as he’s leaving the super person meeting. I was so looking forward to hearing that!

Anyway, yes, those are my gripes with the movie. 4 really, REALLY tiny things that in no way detract from the awesomeness of the film. It was easily as good as I could have possibly imagined a Watchmen film to be. I, as well as America as a whole, highly recommend this film and will immediately declare war on any who dare to defy my opinion. You have been warned/Thank you.

Also, I need a Handsome Genius Club t-shirt. These must enter existence as soon as humanly possible.

I have a few questions for you Kingdom. Well, I’d like to hear your opinions anyways. What do you think of Obama sending 17,000 soldiers into Afghanistan to kill more of those “brown people”? Do you think Obama will have nervous laughter peppered in his explanation for deployment speech? When do you think his mission will be accomplished? Since you are the Genius, I’m sure you’ll have the answers and most reasoned opinions.
