From Printed Page To Silver Screen #9

Welcome fellow Handsome Geniuses to another edition of PP2SS. I’ve not had the chance this month to get to the cinema so I haven’t seen Punisher yet. However if Noah’s review was anything to go by then I’m not missing much there. So for the column this time round I’ve been trawling the news sites for some interesting snippets.

First up is some thing I stumbled across on Latino Review and was later confirmed by Variety. Warner Bros. and producer Joel Silver have set Kung Fu Panda co-director John Stevenson to make his live action directing debut on Masters of the Universe, a re-imagining of the signature Mattel toy line.

WB acquired the property in 2007, and Justin Marks wrote the first draft of the script based on a story he wrote with Neil Ellice. The property was previously turned into an awfull film in 1987 starring Dolph Lungdren as He-Man and, the star of Frost/Nixon, Frank Langella as the villainous Skeletor. Stevenson said he made up his mind when he went to Mattel headquarters and was shown into a secret lair that contained the visuals created by the toymaker staff.

"There was this locked bunker that you had to be escorted into," Stevenson said. "It was filled with art, some generated by the Mattel artists, and I looked around, and said, 'I get it.' We started formulating a specific vision for costumes, creatures, architecture, and the creation of a mythology and look for a whole world we'll create."

Now for the first of two videos, both superbowl spots for upcoming films the first is G.I. Joe. I know Kingdom is worried about how this film is going to work but if the trailer is anything to go by then I’m kinda looking forward to it!

I honestly think this is looking promising, I am not getting too excitied but after seeing this i'm not quite as worried as I was!

Another bit of news comes again from Variety. They are reporting that Emily Blunt has been cast opposite Jack Black and Jason Segel in Gulliver's Travels. Problem is, the film shoots at almost the same time as Iron Man 2. The following is lifted directly from their site.

Blunt had already been offered the role of Black Widow in "Iron Man 2," but that may not be an option because of "Gulliver's Travels." Fox holds an option on the actress that was part of her deal when she co-starred in "The Devil Wears Prada," and the studio may invoke it to see that she takes part in the giant tale.

While Blunt's reps are still trying to work out scheduling so she can play both roles, it will be an uphill battle because of scheduling overlap. "Gulliver's Travels" will shoot in the U.K. in late March; "Iron Man 2" is expected to begin lensing in early April in Manhattan Beach, Calif.

Earlier this week it seemed that Marvel Entertainment would have to go back to the drawing board to find an actress to play Natasha Romanoff, the Soviet superspy who moonlights as Black Widow, a beauty in a skintight black costume enhanced by high-tech weaponry. But by late Thursday, it looked like Fox and Blunt's reps were feeling more optimistic that she could do both projects. So that ends on a positive note... let's hope she can indeed do both.

Now I’m ending on our second Superbowl spot and it looks awesome. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen...

HGC Radio - Episode 20: A Handsome Day's Night

It's the big Two-Oh for The Handsome Genius Club Radio Show. Our twentieth episode and today's show is chock full of HGC goodness. KINGDOM, TJ and NOAH discuss everything from Jessica Simpson's weight gain to this weekend's Super Bowl to a long overdue update on Yoshi The Pug. TJ thinks the movie Pulp Fiction was full of sex and regrets saying it once he's reminded of who was in the movie's only sex scene. Noah tells us about the latest victim in his DJ BattleMonkey XBox Challenge. And Kingdom gets ready to start wrestling again. All this, plus NERD NEWS, a ton more pop culture conversation and special guest DEREK SIMPSON.

Derek is a strip club deejay by day and drummer for the band BIG TOBACCO & THE PICKERS by night. Kingdom and Derek have a hilariously off-color chat about strip clubs, dating dancers and working drunk. The language gets a little salty, so be forewarned!

Phil Stamper VLog: The Hot Mess

Not even an ice storm, Skype viruses, & downed internet can stop The Hot Mess. This week, Phil looks at the battle in the box office as The Wrestler takes on Benjamin Button. But is there someone waiting to do a run-in? And what's going on in England with BBC and iTV? Doctor Who delays? Oh yeah, and Phil has word on one message coming from Outer Space that we don't want to see.

HGC Comic Rack Review: Dragon Prince #4

It was way back on Episode 9 of the Handsome Genius Club Radio Show, that our good friend Lee Moder appeared to discuss his current project: Dragon Prince, a four issue limited series from Top Cow Productions. Veteran artist Moder (Painkiller Jane, Stars and STRIPE) teams with writer Ron Marz (Witchblade) to bring us the story of Aaron Chiang, an Asian-American teenager who's discovery of his true bloodline as last of the dragons puts him in mortal danger.

Marz gives us a whirlwind adventure set at a frentic pace that mirrors young Aaron's experience. Almost like Neo taking the blue pill in the Matrix, Aaron must very quickly come to grips with the fact that his entire life has been a facade. With sinister forces hot on their heels, Aaron must try to master powers and abilities that are barely hours old while he and his mother run for their lives. Along the way, Aaron learns the secret history of both the dragon race and his own family.

Marz' story is a quick and fun read. The dialogue feels authentic and the story has a few good twists with an ending that satisfies but leaves the story open for continuation, if Top Cow chooses. Moder's art is great here. His characters are expressive and his backgrounds are detailed without becoming over-crowded.

The final issue, by the way, is odd, in that it is printed as simply the front cover, inside front cover and twenty-two page story. The inside and outside of the back cover are used for story pages. No ads whatsoever... just uninterupted Marz-Moder goodness. So yes, The HGC Comic Rack highly recommends Dragon Prince #1 thru 4 from Top Cow. Grab from you favorite local retailer today.

Randy "The Ram" Robinson is going to Wrestlemania!!!

According to a post on The Wrestling Observer website, Mickey Rourke was telling people at tonight's Screen Actors' Guild Awards that Mickey Rourke at the SAG Awards tonight said "he'd talked to Vince McMahon and that he would be at WrestleMania, and that he is coming for Chris Jericho." The fine folks at WO have received confirmation of this statement from multiple sources.

This is an about-face on McMahon's part. McMahon predictably poo-poo'd Darren Aronovsky's film "The Wrestler" after the director trekked to Stamford, CT to prvide the wrestling mogul with a private screening. But with the movie's star winning a Golden Globe as best actor and both the star and co-star earning Academy Award nominations... Vince started seeing dollar signs like Scrooge McDuck the moment someone tells him there is profit to be made.

More after the cut...

The WWE has a long history of celebrity involvement inside and around the ring at Wrestlemania, going all the way back to the original event in 1985 which included Muhammed Ali, baseball hall of famer Billy Martin and even Liberace as special guests and actor Mr. T wrestling in the main event. How will Rourke fare without a stunt double or a director to yell "cut"? Will he even wrestle? And what's he getting paid to be part of "The Granddaddy of Them All"?

Notable celebrity 'Mania appearances:
Wrestlemania: Main event features Mr.T/Hulk Hogan vs Roddy Piper/Paul Orndorff with Muhammed Ali as guest referee. Also, Cyndi Lauper manages Wendi Richter in her match against The Great Moolah.
Wrestlemania 11: Main event features NFL superstar Lawrence Taylor fights Bam Bam Bigelow. Pam Amderson and Jenny McCarthy also appeared as valets for the Shawn Michaels vs Kevin "Diesel" Nash title match.
Wrestlemania 14: Main event features Steve Austin vs Shawn Michaels with Mike Tyson as guest referee.
Wrestlemania 14, 15 and 16: The Pete Rose/Kane altercations.
Wrestlemania 23: Involved in a "Battle of the Billionaires" with Bobby Lashley representing him against Vince McMahon's Umaga.
Wrestlemania 24: Boxing champion Floyd Mayweather defeats The Big Show in a bozer/wrestler match.

Mr. T shows some muscle with an airplane spin in the main event of Wrestlemania 1.

"Pretty Boy" Floyd Mayweather resorts to use of a foreign object against the 7ft tall, 440lb Big Show at Wrestlemania 24.

Thanks to Andy Stowell for the tip.

HGC Comic Rack Review: Star Trek Countdown #1

Anyone who's been listening to the HGC Radio Show regularly knows that I think the JJ Abrams-helmed Star Trek movie (creatively titled "Star Trek") is going to suck like a cheap whore at a gaming expo: a lot... and for a huge line-up of nerds who will give it ten bucks and whisper sweet nothings in it's ear because this is the first bit of action they've seen in years. I'm sorry. Was that TOO accurate?

I picked up the first issue of IDW's movie prequel mini-series, Star Trek: Countdown, because, as down as I am about what I've seen of the new movie and how little I like JJ Abrams' work in general, I'm still curious to see this take on the Trek mythology. After reading the first issue yesterday, I was reminded of something I've recently said to people about Marvel's Secret Invasion series and how the aftermath is being played out in other books. "I hate the story that got us here but I like what the other writers are doing with it."

In other words, Secret Invasion was just terrible, but if this is the new continuity we're stuck with, at least writers like Matt Fraction are making the most of it. In the case of Countdown, credit goes to Mike Johnson and Tim Jones for giving us this spoonful of sugar before Abrams and company make us all eat dirt. (And while I'm giving Johnson and Jones credit for this series, screenwriters Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman are credited with "Story by" in the comic with Johnson and Jones credited as "writers". I would like to talk to Johnson and Jones and see what guidelines Abrams and screenwriters Robert Orci and Alex Kurtzman gave them. What latitude were they allowed in creating this backstory?)

As has been mentioned in the media, the plot for "Star Trek" involves Romulans and time travel and Leonard Nimoy's Spock. (And as I've mentioned, why in the hell would you "reintroduce" the franchise with a time travel story since it requires you to know the series' history to know what's "wrong" and since most time travel stories end with the timeline being repaired meaning that the whole story we're about to see "didn't really happen".)

Countdown begins with Nero, the alledged villain of the movie, working as captain of a mining vessel. His ship and crew have a close call when the star of a planet they hope to cultivate begins acting strangely and unleashes a deadly solar flare. Nero sets course for the Romulan Homeworld to report the dangerous situation. He appears before the Senate just in time to corroborate the finding of a certain venerable Vulcan still living on Romulus, close to 40 years after Jean-Luc Picard and his trusty android sidekick Data visited the planet in an attempt to retrieve him. Spock quickly gives us a capsule of his history on Romulus over those decades.

When the Senate stubbornly refuse to take their warnings seriously, Spock and Nero decide to pool their resources to investigate the growing stellar phenomenon on their own. Here's where the story starts to pick up real steam. Remans attack Nero's vessel and a certain familiar ship must come to their rescue. A certain familiar ship with a very unexpected new captain at her helm.

David Messina's art is exceptional here. Reminiscent of Adam Hughes, Messina's art is probably the best I've spotted on a Star Trek comic project since... well, Adam Hughes. (God, how I wish Hughes would do more Trek.)

My reccommendation? Buy this series. I fear that closing in the third and fourth issues, as we get closer to the things having to fit into the opening of the movie script, we'll be faced with some crappiness. But based solely on this issue, ignoring the movie trailer, ignoring the fact that JJ Abrams has barely ever created anything I could watch... based SOLELY on this issue... I say buy this series and see where it leads.

Phil Stamper VLog: Am I Getting Ahead or Seeing the Light?

Did I mention it's 2009!? Happy New Year & welcome to Barack Obama.

Headline Hijinx: Gay Wildlife Threaten Safety
of America's Schoolchildren, Public Parks

Okay, we admit we're taking liberties with a bad pun, but the real headline is just as awesome. The story is pretty frakking funny, too.

Firefighters: Flaming Squirrel To Blame In Jones Wildfire
JONES, Okla. -- A squirrel caught fire, sparking a blaze Wednesday morning that resulted in the evacuation of an elementary school, fire officials said. Investigators said the squirrel touched two power lines at the same time and fell to the ground near Britton and Hiawassee roads.

Big Al's Trailer Park presents Black Dynamite

Done with perfection in the style of 70's blaxploitation films, this gritty urban action-adventure looks to be everything that the Quentin Tarantino/Robert Rodriguez "Grindhouse" project failed to be. Black Dynamite is currently garnering much attention at the Sundance Film Festival. It stars Michael Jai White in the Dolemite-esque title role. Also look for appearances by Arsenio Hall, Mykelti Williamson, Tommy Davidson, singer Brian McKnight, NBA legend John Salley, Phil Morris, Mike Starr and a whole lotta fine-ass bitches...

HGC Comic Rack Review: G.I. Joe #1

Seems like a simple enough premise, right? Each week your Uncle Kingdom will pick up his books on Wednesday morning and review one of them for you. I’ll try to dissect the story, characters and where the plot is headed. I’ll critique the art from style to layout to color. I'll draw parallels between what I'm reading and other comics, tv shows, movies and books. Then, hopefully, at the end of it all, you’ll either have an excuse to try a title you maybe hadn’t thought of buying before or a reason to leave something on your local comic shoppe’s shelf and just walk away. This means there will most certainly be some level of spoilers from time to time, so be forewarned.

This week I’ll be looking at the rebooted and revamped G.I Joe #1 from IDW Publishing. The G.I. Joe property has played hot potato over the last few years, leaving it’s ancestral home at Marvel back in 1994 for a short run at Dark Horse, then to Benchpress Comics (who folded before they published a single issue), next to Devil’s Due (who’s earliest G.I. Joe efforts were actually published via Image Comics) and now to IDW.

To be frank, I gave up reading the adventures of the Joe team probably around issue 60 or 65 of the Marvel series. I had never been really religious about buying the title and the only two issues I ever really completely enjoyed were #2 and #21. But over the years, I would see the title on the shelf and nostalgia would nudge me into considering a purchase. But I hate coming in late on continuity. It’s an OCD of mine. I need a distinct jumping on point. And Devil’s Due’s stuff didn’t grab me enough standing there in the stores and taking a quick peek to overcome said OCD (unlike Ex-Machina or Y The Last Man have managed to do). But IDW, especially with the full reboot, was going to get my money for at least one issue.

After reading the new #1 tonight, they’re probably going to be getting my money for a lot longer than that. It appears that Chuck Dixon is taking the best elements of what has gone before and rewoven them into something fresh and new. As we open on the series, the Joe’s are investigating a series of pirate attacks on frieghters mid-ocean. Cobra is just a rumor, a whisper heard in com traffic that hasn’t been identified yet? Is Cobra a person? An organization? A codename for a terrorist action?

The main characters are being established quickly with Scarlett, Duke and Snake-Eyes taking prominence and Joes like General Hawk, Beachhead and Dial Tone getting the best screen time of the secondary cast. Scarlett is quickly presented as a crucial lynchpin to Joe operations. She is a thinker, tactician and leader. Duke is brash yet there's a lot going on under the surface. Snake Eyes is already as cool as all hell... and he's got a great signature. The villans are still a complete mystery to us as we read this first issue.

The thing I was afraid of before picking up this book was that the tech would be out of control and over the top. The need for more characters/vehicles to become new toys and tech to be used as macguffins to compensate for poor storytelling in the comics drove me away from the Joe franchise. I want a closer-to-reality Joe series about a special ops team fighting a terror group. Don’t overwhelm it with bullshit.

Therefore, I was not overly enthused at the double splash page reveal of The Pit as a literal underground city complete with skyscrapers. That’s a little too StarBlazers for what I want to see here, but the entrance being two non-descript portable bunkers out in the middle of the desert is cool. It puts me in the mind of the first Men In Black movie. This feeling continues when you notice the characters in issue #1 ONLY referring to one another by their codenames and Duke and Beachhead talking to one another about life before and after becoming Joes... especially BEFORE. These Joes have given up their normal lives and every day existance to fight for their country and they are about to face their greatest challenge yet.

Besides the underground city with its holographic sentry, Dixon did one other thing I disliked but he added a twist to it that, for me, totally redeemed the idea. Cobra has a transporter. No, not Jason Statham… Think Star Trek. A matter/energy conversation and transportation device. The problem is that reassembled living matter loses cohesion (ie: breaks down) within just a handful of seconds. Still, that’s enough time to beam an skilled assassin into a locale and have him kill a target, right? Makes you wonder if the assassin is told what is about to happen to him? If not, then he’s dying for an organization that is selling him out. If he IS told, then we’re dealing with a terror group that breeds fanatical loyalty. If there’s anything the 6 o’clock news teaches us is that you can never really defeat religious devotion. The Cobra of this new series can’t be the same bumbling load of oafs that were introduced to us in the 80’s cartoon series. Dixon is already succeeding in his efforts to make the group seem sinister and foreboding.

The art here is well above decent. For me, good art can often make a bad story easier to deal with but crappy art could sink even Shakespeare. Robert Atkins' art is energetic and with only a few moments of nitpickery, I looking at this issue as much as I did reading it. The story is a great opening stanza to this new opus with several subplots/back stories (Beachhead's amnesia, "personal" tension between Duke and Scarlett) comfortably seeded into the dialogue.

And just 'cuz... Here are the Joes identified in this issue: Beachhead, Duke, Dial Tone, Scarlett, Shipwreck, Torpedo, Deep Six, General Hawk, Snake Eyes, Dusty, Frostbite and Airtight.

So, it's a big thumbs up for IDW's G.I.Joe #1 and a great deal of anticipation for #2.

The HGC Radio "Who Is The 12th Cylon?" Contest

Fellow Handsome Geniuses, it’s well past time we had some sort of a contest here at The Handsome Genius Club and we think we've come up with a good one to start with. We want you to tell us who the 12th Cylon will be. It's that simple. If you've been watching Battlestar Galactica, you know that there are 12 mondels of the humanoid Cylons and that 11 of those models have now been revealed. The show promises that the mystery of the 12th Cylon will be solved sometime during the shows final ten episodes. (BSG Season 4.5 begins on Space in Canada and Sci-Fi in the United States on Friday January 16th at 10pm EST)

Who do you think it will be? Gaius Baltar? Admiral Adama? President Roslin? Tom Zarek? Or maybe it's been Starbuck all along!!!

Send your guess via e-mail to handsomegeniusclub@gmail.com before noon on Friday January 16th 2009 and from amongst the correct answers, one person’s name will be drawn to receive a Handsome Genius prize pack. There’ll be a HGC t-shirt in there, an Oblivion cd, maybe a nude photo with TJ with Yoshi in front of his junk. We haven't decided what the prize pack will be yet, but we know you'll love it! And remember, this is going to be held very strictly to one guess per person, so choose carefully and e-mail us today.

From Printed Page To Silver Screen #8

"She is my woman and I am her Spirit."

Well i was pretty hung over after my New Years party but I did it. I payed my money, I drank the coke and ate the popcorn and I watched The Spirit. Those are in order of what I liked most about my day today. It wasn't all bad but it wasn't all good. There was a trailer for The Wrestler and for Watchmen, both of those were good, but the film wasn't.

So let's get down to it, Frank Miller has taken a classic comic strip and raped it. My first big issue is with Samuel L Jackson and 'The Octopus'. For anybody who has read The Spirit you will know that nobody knows what Octopus looks like, he is a master of disguise and only his gloves are ever seen. In this film they have totally changed The Octopus into a stupid character. He changes costumes for no real reason, unless you are tryin to refer back to the comic book character but then unless you've read the comics it just looks stupid.

Personally I think the changes in costume were just a symptom of the main issue with the whole film. Millers hang up with the visuals. The whole film was more about how things looked as opposed to the story. I think there was a story it just got lost in shuffle as the whole film was geared around the visuals. If you try and compare it to Sin City then The Spirit falls flat on it's face.

The visuals in Sin City are awesome but the story doesn't suffer. When Miller made Sin City he had never done anything like it, nobody had. The film was lauded for the way it looked as well as it's close relationship with the original comics. This has been the death of Spirit. Miller has tried so hard to make it look like Sin City, that he has forgotten the story and it is a sin.

All in, the characters were cheesey and paper thin, the story was paper thin, the Spirit's monologues came over cheesey. Can you see where I'm going with this? Can you tell what I thought? Avoid it folks, don't waste your money. January is hard enough month money wise and with the financial climate the way it is we all need our money and we need to spend it wisely and spending it on The Spirit at the Cinema is a complete waste.

There is some news from the world of Comic films this week. Staying with Frank Miller and Oddlot (the production company behind The Spirit) they are trying to secure the rights to Buck Rodgers. With all the negative press surrounding the Spirit right now i'm surprised that faith in Miller hasn't been damaged but Oddlot don't seem to care. It also looks like Miller will be giving this priority over Sin City 2. After what I saw today this news worries me ALOT!

Rebellion and 2000 AD have announced that a new Judge Dredd movie is in development. Together with DNA Films, the movie production company behind such films as Danny Boyle's Sunshine and 28 Weeks Later, Judge Dredd will go into production in 2009.Jason Kingsley, CEO and Creative Director said, "We can't give away too many details at this point, but we're looking forward to working with DNA Films to bring Judge Dredd back to the big screen."

And finally I found something on YouTube which I thought everybody would appreciate. This has to be one of the best fan trailers i have ever seen I'm giving nothing away but I highly recommend you all check it out. Have a Happy New Year fellow Handsome Geniuses.
