The Hot Mess: Wolverine, Star Trek, & Bill Murray

Who's crazier? Me or whoever approved a low flying Boeing 747 (a.k.a. Air Force One) in New York City? NBC's infatuation with Southland apparently beats out Kings and CBS's Harpers Island. What's the freakier picture - Russell Crow in Ridley Scott's Robin Hood or Bill Murray as an undead zombie? But what's hotter as the summer movie season kicks off: Wolverine or Star Trek?

HGC Radio - Episode 31: All Gamblers Die Broke

[DOWNLOAD MP3]

The HANDSOME GENIUS CLUB RADIO SHOW is back again this week with another episode full of free-wheelin' fun featuring the clown princes of pop culture conversation. Join host ANTHONY KINGDOM JAMES and technical producer TJ HABIBI as they lay down a fine white noise of jibber-jabber to help you get through your busy day. Uncle Kingdom and Brother Teej start the show off in fine form goofing on Jamie Foxx for apologizing to Miley Cyrus, railing against the evils of the Disney Corporation, finding out who's playing TJ in a re-enactment on the tv show "Ghost Hunters" and discussing a surprise exchange of "tweets" that Kingdom had with a famous television personality via Twitter.com.

Then, BamKapow.com's FRANK MOVSESIAN joins Kingdom to discuss a few upcoming movies and some casting rumors for movies about to go into production. (Brian Austin Green as Green Lantern? Give us a break!) Then, the guys check in with NOAH PANICO. Noah is on the road again and joins the show from New York City where he's meeting with both the Yankees and the Mets this week. Then the show wraps up with the week prescribed dose of NERD NEWS.

Hulk Hogan "totally understands" OJ Simpson.

Everybody knows that divorce sucks. No one wins when a family is shattered. The best thing for everyone involved is to try and get through it quickly and fairly and with some level of dignity. And then there's Hulk Hogan and his soon-to-be ex-wife Linda. Hogan, in a new interview with Rolling Stone magazine, says that he can "totally understand" O.J. Simpson, the NFL legend found civilly liable (but not criminally guilty... way to go American legal system!) for the deaths of Nicole Brown-Simpson, his ex-wife, and Ronald Goldman, a waiter from a local restaurant stupid enough to volunteer to return a pair of eyeglasses to Nicole.

"I could have turned everything into a crime scene like O.J., cutting everybody's throat," Hogan said in the interview. "You live half a mile from the 20,000-square-foot home you can't go to anymore, you're driving through downtown Clearwater [Florida] and see a 19-year-old boy driving your Escalade, and you know that a 19-year-old boy is sleeping in your bed, with your wife..."

"I totally understand O.J. I get it."

In response, Linda Hogan said "Sadly, his recent comments remind us that his definition of fair is much different than what the law dictates." Now if you've ever seen an episode of the family's "reality" show, Hogan Knows Best, you will agree Linda Hogan is practically a Pakled (you know... those aliens from Star Trek: The Next Generation who sucker you in with how feeble they are and then rob you blind for everything you're worth) and only half as attractive. That and she raised two of the most useless fucking kids currently haunting planet Earth.

But for Hogan to go public with his desire to go all Chris Benoit/family anhiliator on his gold-digging ex? Why not just hand her the bank accounts and go live in the woods?

Stop cutting promo, Hulk! Shut your big stupid mouth until the divorce is finalized. You've just made Linda's lawyers' case for them. You're a big scary pro wrestler who wanted to do her harm and she had every right to fear you and want out of the marriage. I sure hope CMT buys another season of Celebrity Championship Wrestling, pal. You're gonna need the money... very soon.

The Hot Mess: EPIC FAIL - Dragonball

I can't talk about the hot mess that is the costumes for Tron 2 or the expectation of Angelina Jolie in Sin City 2. Why? The EPIC FAIL that was Dragonball Evolution.

NOTE: I'll prob still get the Blu-Ray just for maybe some cool looks at the Dragonball story.

HGC Radio - Episode 30: Kingdom's 38th Birthday Spectacular

[DOWNLOAD MP3]

It's really just a fluke of the calendar that has ANTHONY KINGDOM JAMES recording this week's episode of the HANDSOME GENIUS CLUB RADIO SHOW on his birthday. Kingdom's got a lot to talk about today. Personally and professionally, Uncle Kingdom has a bunch of stuff going on in his life and he's sharing it all with you, including the outrageous story of a new dancer at his strip club who may just have set the records for both "Craziest" and "Quickest To Be Fired" in one wacky night!

Speaking of AKJ's strip club job, his boss and semi-regular on the HGC Radio Show, BIG RON LARMONDIN joins the show to talk crazy strippers and to debate how pro sports leagues should handle athletes who commit crimes off the field and if there's ever a time when law enforcement should step in to punish acts of violence that occur ON the playing field. Plus, we've got TJ HABIBI, YOSHI THE PUG and a whole mess of NERD NEWS for you.

Death and Resurrection in Comics

(Editor's note: As part of our growing working relationship with BamKapow!, I wrote an article for that site about how mainstream comics handle death amongst major characters. Just in case you missed the article on BK!, here it is for your reading enjoyment at the HGC.)

Howdy, kids! It’s your old friend Anthony Kingdom James, professional wrestler, aspiring comic book writer and host of the Handsome Genius Club Radio Show. The brains behind BamKapow! told me I could write about anything I wanted. With that in mind, I figured this was as good a place as any to publish my right wing political manifesto and declare myself the Generalissimo-for-Life of New Freeland, an independent nation I have just established within the boundaries of my apartment here in Toronto. (I’m thinking of annexing the apartment next door but don’t tell the couple that lives there. Once my troops are occupying their living room, they‘ll learn to love life under my fascist dictatorship.)

Okay, startlingly funny intros aside, I’d really like to talk to you about death in mainstream comics or rather the lack thereof. Now I admit, this isn’t exactly a new topic or a new complaint from a hardcore fan, but some recent events over at DC Comics are inspiring me to yappity-yap-yap about it here on the interwebs. Just this week, DC published “The Flash: Rebirth”, the series that will help to reintroduce Barry Allen to the DC Universe. I’d say bravo to DC for holding out a full 23 years to resurrect this version of the Flash but they didn’t really wait, did they?

Since Barry Allen heroically gave his life to help defeat the Anti-Monitor is 1986’s Crisis On Infinite Earths maxi-series, Allen has made numerous appearances mostly due to his ability to travel through time and dimensional space. I won’t go into the asinine mechanics of his actual return to the living except to say that just reading the Wikipedia entry about Barry Allen made me want to punch myself in the face.

Why can’t characters STAY DEAD? Well the answer is simple really. Economics. There’s money to be made in big, sloppy storylines like Final Crisis or Batman R.I.P. or The Death of Superman. There’s money to be made by killing iconic characters and just as much money to be made in the return of those same characters. Artistic integrity can just be damned. Does anyone think Bruce Wayne won’t be Batman again before the end of 2009? Did anyone think Superman wouldn’t return back in 1993?

Jason Todd. Jean Grey. Green Arrow. Hawkeye. All died. All returned. Steve Rogers will be back eventually as Captain America.

The problem here is you diminish the true impact of death on both the reader and the characters they are reading about. When Frank Miller created and then killed Elektra, it was for a reason: to completely eff over Matt Murdoch and give his life a new tragedy to go all emo over. There’s nothing quite like a little soul-crushing emotional baggage to motivate a superhero. And hell, in the case of Elektra, Miller was promised that the character would never be resurrected without his permission. Well, that baby went out the window with the bathwater, didn’t it?

Why should you the reader give a single flying fadoo when Marvel or DC or Image kill a character? You shouldn’t. T-shirt sales alone will probably ensure they return down the road. Or there’s a new writer who just really, really wants to do a story with that character. Or there’s a dip in sales of the character’s title after his nephew or cousin or sidekick or bastard love child or a Skrull takes up his holy mantle.

There’s a lot of good reasons to look beyond the worlds of the Big Two for good reading material. Look to places with fresh new ideas that are not bogged down with decades of contradictory continuity and poorly conceived retcon storylines.

Now don’t get me wrong… I haven’t sworn off Marvel or DC. I just opened myself up to new publishers and new characters. So let’s talk indy comics. What non-DC/Marvel/Image/Dark Horse books are YOU reading? What corner of the comic book universe are you exploring? Drop me an e-mail at handsomegeniusclub@gmail.com and let me know what’s worth reading.

HGC Radio - Episode 29: Enter The Genius!!!

[DOWNLOAD MP3]

Today's episode of The Handsome Genius Club Radio Show is more fun than a hooker and a clown on a roadtrip to Vegas, kids! ANTHONY KINGDOM JAMES is your ringmaster for this three-ring circus of jockularity, TJ HABIBI is the daring young man on the flying trapeze and NOAH PANICO will be shot out of a cannon through a ring of fire! Today's guest is the HGC's new "Gamer Girl", Ray. When Ray isn't out on the town being the hot Asian chick of your dreams, she's playing World Of Warcraft as a 66th level Death Knight! Ray will explain the appeal of WoW to Kingdom and reveals what's the longest time she's ever spent online in one sitting. (You'll freak when you hear the answer!)

Also, is Kingdom falling in love? Why is Noah in trouble with the Washington Nationals baseball club? Did TJ just come out of the closet in Secret Suburbia's new music video? Are the guys making too many gay jokes? Why did Kingdom no-show his lunch with Tha O Show's Bid Daddy Donnie? The answers to all these questions plus your weekly dose of NERD NEWS, some talk about an upcoming interview guest and Uncle Kingdom rewrites the lyrics to a Secret Suburbia song!

PWA TV Episode 1 w/ Anthony Kingdom James

I've spoken on HGC Radio over the last few months about returning to action as a professional wrestler here in Ontario, Canada. Well just today, the Pure Wrestling Association released Episode 1 of their new online tv show. It's a 6+ minute capsule of recent matches and upcoming events. This episode features a verbal confrontation between myself, Anthony Kingdom James, and "The Motion Picture" Ethan Page. I hope you can all make it out to BOOMERS' on North Kenilworth in Hamilton on April 19th to watch Page and I fight. Until then, enjoy the episode.
