As the world waits with baited breath for Your Hero to get off his lazy duff and put a few new episodes of HGC Radio on the interwebs, Kingdom actually has a new blog project going on over at KingdomJames.com. It's called "101 Things To Do In 1001 Days". It's kind of a bucket list project, where, as the project title implies, Kingdom has set himself 101 tasks to complete in 1001 days. (Never fear, kids. One of the tasks is "restart HGC radio and get to at least episode 100".) Anyways, here's a video of AKJ's first project weekend, wherein he accomplished three of the 101 tasks.

Buy Me Stuff: Flip-Out Keyboard for iPhone!

My favorite cel phone of all time is still my old Danger Hiptop/Sidekick. The flip screen that opened to reveal the full QWERTY keyboard? Magnificent. It was a sad day in your Uncle Kingdom's life when that phone died. I've been using the Apple iPhone (first the 3G and now the 4) for the last almost three years... but it just ain't the same. But now, a ray of light shines down from the heaven that is ThinkGeek.com.

Introducing the TK-421 (HA! Star Wars reference!) Flip-Out Keyboard for the iPhone. Look at that thing! It's gorgeous... and I must have one. An actual physical keyboard is, at least for me, vastly more desirable than a purely touchscreen device, but I've never liked Blackberrys. The TK-421 connects via Bluetooth rather than by any kind of docking connection, which worries me as far as battery usage goes, but if it operates half as well as it looks, this could create cel phone nirvana.

The TK-421 is currently on sale for $40. I'll let you know if it's any good.

Hama, as you will remember, was the interview guest on Episode 48 of HGC Radio. (That's the interview where Larry revealed, for the very first time anywhere, that he had just learned what "Knowing Is Half The Battle" meant.) Anthony Kingdom James went to the convention today to thank Mr. Hama in person for his popular appearance on the show and to present him with his very own Handsome Genius Club t-shirt. I Bought The Iron Sheik A Hamburger... And Lived To Tell About It

“Woochu buy me a hahm-boorger?”

These were not the words I ever expected to come out of the mouth of The Iron Sheik.

As I sat in a folding chair after getting my picture taken with the professional wrestling legend in a high school gymnasium recently, I more expected The Iron Sheik to boast voraciously about being the man who ended Bob Backlund’s nearly six-year reign as WWF Champion. Or I thought he might fish for a quick compliment. Or, just maybe, I’d be lucky enough that he’d call me an anti-gay slur while threatening to make me “humble” by anally raping me, as he’s done countless times on YouTube in rants against, among others, Hulk Hogan.

But I never expected The Iron Sheik to hit me up for a sandwich.

The Sheik was making an appearance for National Championship Wrestling, a small indy which is anything but “national” and runs out of my hometown of York, Pa. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve seen many, many quality workers wrestle in NCW over the years, but no one is going to confuse it for Paul Heyman’s ECW anytime soon.

Anyway, for weeks prior to the show, my friend Mike and I talked about the many great things we could do to antagonize the notoriously nutty Iron Sheik. We could go out and get Hulk Hogan T-shirts to wear to the show. We could tell him that we saw the Ultimate Warrior perform the greatest version of the Camel Clutch we ever witnessed. We could question him regarding the YouTube video in which “Killer Bee” Brian Blair claims Iron Sheik “molested” a “little kid” (though to be fair, Blair immediately backpedals on this claim in the interview).

But after I paid my $20 to sit in a chair and be photographed with my own cell phone camera in the middle of two of old-school wrestling’s most notorious baddies, The Iron Sheik and Nikolai Volkoff, all of those thoughts disappeared from my head. I’m not proud to admit it, but even at 66 years old, and even though I had just watched him amble into that little high school gymnasium with the assistance of a cane, I was afraid of The Iron Sheik.

Volkoff? He seemed like a nice old man. He reminded me of a guy you’d sit next to at a VFW hall and trade dirty jokes with between sips of cheap beer. But The Sheik? You could see the insanity in his eyes. You could tell that in his mind, he was still that hulking, athletic mass of muscle, able to beat the ever-loving shit out of any man who dares cross him.

Sure, he smiled broadly and no longer wore the uniform of an anti-American, Ayatollah-worshipping Iranian. “I luff USA,” he told the crowd of hundreds who had gathered in southern York County. This was further advertised by The Sheik’s American flag bandana which, if his YouTube clips from the past few years are any indication, he wears often.

But he is still a scary man. Just before I sat to get my picture taken, The Sheik signed the T-shirt of a kid who looked to be about 15 years old. As the kid started to walk away, The Sheik got angry and yelled, “Hey, he need to pay me!” After the manager stopped the kid, The Sheik agreed that if the kid bought him a burger, he wouldn’t have to pay him for the autograph.

And then it was my turn to get my picture taken. As I sat in the chair, I got called a “jabroni” by Mr. Volkoff, who I swear said “jabroni” as if it was a term of endearment, and The Sheik demanded that I hold his replica WWE World Championship Belt over my shoulder. Why he bought that model belt, I have no idea, as I’m pretty sure it doesn’t resemble any of the belts he wore during his career. Maybe it was a present from Vince after getting elected into the WWE Hall of Fame? So we took a great picture, the three of us, whom I fantasized would be called “The New Axis of Evil.” Perhaps my character could be James W. Sanders, an evil American imperialist neocon?

This fantasy didn’t last long, for then it happened. I got hit up by the Iron Sheik to buy him a burger. “How much food does this guy need?” I thought to myself (I didn’t mention that he was already eating a burger before I approached his merch table for the photo, before he had demanded another burger from the pencil-necked adolescent). “When the fuck did The Iron Sheik turn into ‘Wimpy’ from Popeye?” I asked myself.

But, I rationalized, if I were at a bar, I would definitely buy The Iron Sheik a beer. So why not buy him a burger? “Because he just charged you $10 to sit next to him for a photo!” I can hear my dad saying to me. But whatever; I buckled. I bought The Iron Sheik a hamburger.

When I returned to my seat to show my friend Mike the awesome photo I had just paid to have taken, I flat out told him a boldfaced lie, which yes, I still regret. I told my friend that I got a discount on the photo for buying The Sheik the burger. Why did I lie to my friend? I guess I was embarrassed about being intimidated by a 66-year-old man who walks with a cane. Or maybe I just didn’t want to admit, even to my fellow wrestling fan friend, that I felt enough reverence toward that crazy old bastard to buy him a burger on top of the money I just gave him for the picture.

But what makes me feel even stranger is the fact that though I’ve previously met sports legends such as Mario Andretti, Joe Montana, and Hulk Hogan, I was still kind of shaking when I returned to my seat after looking into the eyes of the infamous, the insane, The Iron Sheik.

HGC Comic Rack Review - Superman: Secret Origin #1

With so much worthy of reviewing from this week's new books, it was hard to choose just one... so I chose two. (Check back later today for a review of Wolverine: Old Man Logan.) First up is Superman: Secret Origin by Geoff Johns and Gary Frank. Honest to god, I wasn't going to buy this book. I was going to make a personal stand against the telling and re-telling and re-telling of origin stories. Superman, Batman, Spider-Man... new writers are constantly giving their perspective, their take on how these characters came to be. Superman came to Earth in a rocketship. Batman's parents were murdered in a theatre alley. Spider-Man was bitten by a radioactive spider and then let his Uncle Ben die. You take this one focal point and then subtly re-invent.

But how many of these re-inventions can one reader endure? But Kody Peters at Toronto's Silver Snail only had to hold up a copy and quietly say "This is good." and I was sold. And MAN, is this book good.

When the story opens, Clark Kent (who's character design looks suspiciously like what you'd think a young Christopher Reeve would look like) is a 13- or 14-year old kid, dealing with the trials of puberty in his hometown of Samllville, Kansas. School? Not a problem. Family? The best any kid could hope for. Love interest? Lana Lang seems plenty interested in making her lifelong friendship with our boy into something more. So what's the problem, you ask?

Well Clark keeps... doing stuff. Exhibiting powers and abilities far beyond those of mortal men. Strength. Invulnerability. And now heat and x-ray vision. It's becoming a huge problem. That's when his parents, Johnathan and Martha (or Ma and Pa Kent, if you prefer) decide it's time to tell him the truth.

What will they say? How much do they actually know? How will Clark react? What strange powers will he exhibit next? How will he handle matters the next time Lana tries to kiss him? And who is this Lex Luthor kid with the strange glowing green rock?

Everything I said about not wanting another origin story went right out the window after the first few pages. Clean, simple, expressive art and what is shaping up to be some of the best writing of 2009. Kids, even if you haven't read a Superman book in years... maybe ESPECIALLY if you haven't done so... BUY THIS BOOK!

10. ST: New Voyages - World Enough and Time
When a failed Romulan weapons test traps the Enterprise in an inter-dimensional rift, Sulu and another crewmate are sent over to the wreckage of the Romulan ships. The anomaly's effect on the transporter causes Sulu to come back 30 years older... and with a daughter.

AKJ Says: For ten years between the end of Deep Space Nine and the debut of the JJ Abrams reboot movie, probably the best source of new Trek wasn't Hollywood at all but rather a series of fanfilms made in Upstate New York by fledling actor James Cawley. Check out this fourth outing (labelled Episode 3 on the ST:NV website) which guest stars George Takei as the elder Sulu.

9. Star Trek: First Contact
The crew of the Enterprise-E pursues the Borg back in time as they threaten to prevent first contact between Humans and Vulcans, thus destroying the Federation before its founding.

AKJ says: The Borg really live up to their scary potential in this best of TNG's feature outings. And Picard is finally shows a little of that gun-toting, punch-throwing, Kirk-style action hero that we've always wanted from him.

8. ST: The Original Series - Balance of Terror
While investigating a series of destroyed outposts, the Enterprise discovers a lone Romulan vessel with a cloaking device. The Romulans, having never been seen by humans, are revealed to visually resemble Vulcans, which causes navigator Lt. Stiles to suspect Spock of treason. The two ships become locked in a cat-and-mouse battle through space, leaving the Enterprise seemingly crippled by Romulan weapons.

AKJ says: God, I love this episode. It's basically an old World War 2 submarine movie with a great sci-fi twist. Very dramatic. Mark Lenard, later to appear as Spock's father Sarek, is fantastic as the Romulan commander.

7. ST: The Original Series - Amok Time
Mr. Spock shows evidence of starting to lose control over his emotions. When he insists that he needs to return home to Vulcan, despite being engaged in an important diplomatic mission, Kirk forces him to admit that Vulcan biology requires him to take a mate. After diverting to Vulcan against Starfleet's direct orders, Kirk finds himself in a life-or-death struggle against Spock, at the instigation of Spock's wife-to-be.

Who DOESN'T have that incredible "star trek fight scene" music in their head right now? Logic be damned, Spock is headed upstream to spawn like a pointy-eared salmon and nothing's going to stop him. Kirk's loyalty to Spock can never be questioned with the sacrifices he makes in this episode. Plus, Angry Spock is even cooler to watch than Laughing Spock.

6. ST: The Next Generation - The Inner Light
A space probe creates a telepathic tether to Captain Picard and causes him to experience, in twenty-five minutes, a lifetime as a married man on a world that was destroyed a millennium ago.

One of the great things about the Star Trek series is how, after the first couple of seasons when you've firmly established the characters with the audience, you have a shortcut to tell a very interesting story like this one. Coming into this episode, everyone knows the kind of man Picard is. His loyalty to his ship and crew, his loyalty to the truth and that slightly obsessive stick up his ass for things to be "just so". The Inner Light shows just how far you have to go to break his routine and what kind of man truly resides within him.

5. ST: The Original Series - Mirror, Mirror
A transporter mishap slips Captain Kirk and his companions into a parallel universe, where the Enterprise serves a barbaric Empire instead of the Federation.

AKJ says: This is the episode that taught us all that the sudden appearance of a goatee means you're dealing with your friend's evil twin. A universe populated by evil versions of all the characters we've come to know and love? Career advancement via murder? Jetting across the galaxy on a mission of war and conquest? Count me in!

3. (tie) ST: The Original Series - City On The Edge of Forever
After accidentally overdosing on a powerful stimulant, Dr. McCoy acts erratically and disappears through the Guardian of Forever, a time portal on a remote planet. Kirk and Spock follow after learning that McCoy somehow changed history. Arriving in the 1930s, the duo meet Edith Keeler, a New York social worker. As the days pass, and McCoy is nowhere to be seen, Kirk finds himself falling in love with Keeler but Spock discovers that she must die to restore the timeline.

3. (tie) ST: The Next Generation - Yesterday’s Enterprise
The Enterprise-C arrives from the past, causing a shift in reality which includes the return of deceased Enterprise-D officer Tasha Yar. To set things straight, Captain Picard must convince the crew of the Enterprise-C to return to their time and sacrifice their lives for a reality they’ll never know.

AKJ says: Sacrifice is the name of the game in these two episodes which most fans and critics cite as each series' best episode. As Spock would later say, the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few and the fates of untold billions lead to heartbreak and loss for Jim Kirk and the ultimate sacrifice of one's own life for Tasha Yar.

2. ST: Deep Space 9 - In The Pale Moonlight
Desperate to even the odds in the war against the Dominion, Captain Sisko enlists Garak and sacrifices his own morality in a conspiracy to convince the Romulans to join the fight and aid the Federation.

AKJ says: Possibly my single favorite episode of any Trek tv series (TOS episode "This Side of Paradise" is a close rival), highlights Ben Sisko's moral quandry over how to save the Federation in the midst of its war with the Dominion. Is any depth to low for the upstanding space station commander to sink to if it will assure victory?

1. Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan
While exploring test sites for the Genesis terraforming project, the U.S.S. Reliant is hijacked by Khan Noonien Singh, bent on revenge against James T. Kirk who frustrated his plans to seize control of the Enterprise fifteen years earlier. Khan attacks the Enterprise on a training cruise with inexperienced Starfleet cadets led by now-Admiral Kirk who has not commanded a starship for some time.

This movie has everything: action, adventure, science, horror, suspense, humour. It's well-written and well-acted and it truly is the Best Trek of All-Time. Go watch The Original Series episode "Space Seed" again and then settle in for this tale of obsessive revenge on a truly galactic scale.

HGC Comic Rack Review - Ultimate Spider-Man Vol.2 #1

An opportunity lost. That's my reaction to the first issue of the rebooted Ultimate Spider-Man series. The mistake was made the moment Spider-Man's body was found amongst the carnage of post-Ultimatum Wave New York City.

At the end of Ultimate Spider-Man Vol.1 #133, readers are left with the notion that Spider-Man is dead. At the end of Ultimate Spider-Man: Requiem #2, we see Peter Parker open his eyes through his battle-torn Spider-Man mask. At the beginning of Ultimate Spider-Man Vol.2 #1, we are re-introduced to Peter Parker six months after the events of Ultimatum. He is taking fast food orders as a cashier at a burger joint called Burger Frog. He's still living with Aunt May. He's still Spider-Man. He's still a ball of pitiable teen angst.

So, fellow Handsome Geniuses, your Uncle Kingdom is compelled to ask: What was the frakking purpose of Ultimatum? Why was the original USM series cancelled? Except for the fact that he's making out with Gwen Stacy, not a damn thing seems to have changed for the Ultimate universe's web-slinger. Hell, even the city of New York is shown to be sparkling and new only 180 days after being "destroyed".

"With no warning a massive tidal wave crashed down on the island of Manhattan killing millions of people in the blink of an eye", we are told. Mary Jane tells us that the Eastern Seaboard was "wiped out". But man oh man, the city looks good now. Does anyone remember September 11th, 2001? Does anyone remember how long clean up of the World Trade Center site took. Has construction on anything new even started there? This new series should be taking place in a still-RUINED New York City.

The original USM series went HOW many issues before we really saw Peter become Spider-Man? This go-around, we see Spidey up and around barely half way through the story and all he does is appear on the scene AFTER a new, mysterious costumed vigilante has stopped a hold-up using vicious tactics.

There should have been some mystery to the in-story return of both Parker and his alter ego to post-Ultimatum New York. The story should have started with Aunt May, Mary Jane and cast still dealing with Peter's "death". And why six months later? Make it a year. Give everyone a reason to gather: to remember their fallen friend. Have J. Jonah Jameson speak at a public rally and unveil a memorial statue that he funded himself and significant for being something new amongst the devastated backdrop of New York. With this terrible anniversary passing and life only beginning to return to normal for New Yorkers, let a new Spider-Man appear on the scene. Maybe he's meaner than the old Spider-Man. Maybe his tactics are more brutal. Maybe Jameson's delight at the return of Spider-Man turns to horror when the new wall-crawler takes a life.

In the wake of the city's new hatred for Spider-Man, you would have May and MJ trying to track down the new Spider-Man. Could it possibly be Peter? Is it someone new desecrating the memory of their beloved? Delve into the new life of the clone calling herself Spider-Woman and how Aunt May is handling her existence. Let Johnny Storm and Kitty Pryde and Spider-Woman hunt down the new Spider-Man. Let THAT be the first story arc.

Instead, we got a story that felt like it could have been from anywhere in the middle of the original series' run. I'm disappointed in writer Brian Michael Bendis and even moreso in Marvel Comics for this lackluster effort. This did not feel like an exciting new chapter in the life of Peter Parker. This felt like business as usual.

Mind you... business as usual is why I read the book in the first place. Bendis has done great things reworking the Spider-Man mythology this past decade. As for new series artist David Lafuente... I LIKE his art but I'm not in LOVE with it. This situation is a Kobayashi Maru for Lafuente. He is replacing possibly my single favourite artist of all time, Stuart Immonnen, on this title. Very few penciller are going to escape the stink-eye from me on this one. All I can say is stop drawing Spidey's head like its an over-acheiving seven year old's Easter egg project.

But the facts are that Bendis and Lafuente are good. The series will be good. It's just sad knowing that this first issue could have been GREAT.

Iron Man looks fantastic, just as you'd expect from a Japanese production involving an tech-armored hero. Wolverine, however... I guess the stories will be about Logan's time in Japan, which is great, but I DO NOT like the character design. Why does Wolverine have to look like a tall, lanky transsexual goth rocker?

HGC Comic Rack Review - Power Girl #3

Following on the heels of their four-issue "Terra" mini-series, the creative team of writers Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Gray and penciller Amanda Conner have taken up the task of a new on-going series for DC's most buxom alternate universe Kryptonian crimestopper. For those not in the know with this character, the simple version is this: Power Girl is the Earth-2 version of Supergirl. There. Done. She's here now and let's not let the constant tinkering with DC continuity upset the apple cart.

Gray and Palmiotti are writing a very fun, very over-the-top superhero smash'em up book that is perfectly complimented by Amanda Conner's smooth, cartoony style. Her art is appealing, easy on the eyes and conveys action well. And the stories she's been given to draw put me in mind of the new Batman: Brave and the Bold cartoon or of a much better written version the old 1967 Spider-Man cartoon (specifically, this first three-issue story arc reminds me of the second season episode "Swing City").

The series follows our heroine as she goes about reclaiming her secret identity as Karen Starr, CEO of Starrware Industries and attempts to make a life for herself outside of superhero-ing. But when the Ultra-Humanite attacks, it's Power Girl who leaps once more into the breach to protect innocent life. This first story arc includes guest appearances by Terra, PG's young friend and fledgling heroine herself, as well as Power Girl's teammates from the Justice Society.

While most books are trying to achieve a dark and sinister edge, "Power Girl" is what it is: a comic where bad guys with outlandish schemes get the snot beaten out of them by a chick who makes your girlfriend was into cosplay. This book comes highly recommended by the Handsome Genius Club.

Buy Me Stuff: Star Trek Original Series film cels

An 11-foot piece of film from the "Mirror, Mirror" episode of the original Star Trek series is currently up for sale on eBay.

Here's a quote from the description of the item: "This is a unique, one-of-a-kind item. I was an assistant film editor on the original series of Star Trek and this is an original section of film that came right out of the camera after shooting. This is from the episode "Mirror, Mirror" which aired October 6, 1967. The clipping is 11 feet 7 frames long, about 183 frames total. Pictured on the film is Chekov (Walter Koenig) when he is foiled in his attempt to kill Captain Kirk. The clip follows the fight sequence and includes two different phaser blasts which were hand scribed by me back in 1969. This is a work print used for editing and special effects."

The auction ends Friday evening. Starting bid was $500 and its currently up to $666. Someone rich should buy this and donate it to the Handsome Genius Club Museum of Cool Stuff.

HGC Comic Rack Review: Amazing Spider-Man #600

As part of it's ongoing 70th anniversary celebrations, Marvel Comics has undone some of it's own silliness by re-establishing the original numbering of several of it's most prominent titles. This has allowed a number of their their more prestigious titles and characters to enjoy milestone issues this year. Thor #600. Captain America #600. Hulk #600. Next month's Daredevil #500. But today our focus is on Marvel's flagship title, Amazing Spider-Man, and its 600th issue. This 100-plus page spectacular features a whopping 62 page main story written by Dan Slott, with art by the premiere Spider-team of John Romita, Jr. and Klaus Janson.

With the wedding of Peter Parker's Aunt May to arch-nemesis J. Jonah Jameson the third's father, JJJ2, imminent, Parker's friendly neighbourhood alter ego must contend with the return of Dr. Otto Octavius aka Doctor Octopus. Years of constant beatings at the hands of a plethora of super-heroes and super-villains alike have taken a deadly toll on Doc Ock and the super-genius makes one last desperate grasp at both greatness and revenge.

Romita's Jr's artist abilities improve with each passing year and this issue is fantastic and Slott has given him a great story to illustrate. I've mentioned before that I haven't been in love with a lot of the continuity the last few years, but I have an abiding love of the character that keeps me coming back. I have also never been a tremendous fan of Aunt May's (my god, you old biddy... why won't you just shuffle off this mortal coil once and for all, already!?!) and yet I really enjoyed this issue.

Ock's return is well-done. Despite his now failing health, new life has been breathed in the character. His caper re-eastablishes him as one of Marvel's pre-eminent (although not-so-handsome) geniuses and gives him a new/renewed purpose for what may now be his final string of appearances.

There's even that certain Peter Parker-specific suspense about whether or hero will make it to May and Jonah's wedding. He's missed so many events and occasions because of Spider-Man... will this be just one more time he lets down those nearest and dearest to him? And there's plenty of special appearances not just by Peter's nearest and dearest but by Spidey's too... and the return of the one person he has held dearest of all.

ASM #600 also features a number of back-up shorts including a piece written by Spidey's creator, Stan Lee, and a short prologue/teaser for the next major story rc coming Spidey's way.

Amazing Spider-Man #600 is on newsstands today from Marvel Comics.
